A CAUTIONARY TALE OF HOW A JEALOUS EX-PARTNER CAN SNAP.
Today's guest, James Brunson shares his story of going through a life-threatening ordeal when he was in a new relationship with a survivor of a past abusive relationship and how things escalated as soon as her jealous ex-partner became aware of their relationship.
This conversation is such a clear example of how easily jealousy can cause a person to snap and become dangerous.
This is a stark reminder of how important it is to stay on your guard when you have a partner or an ex-partner who is prone to be jealous.

Here are the top tips of today’s episode:

- When a victim breaks free from a cycle of abuse they do not know if they have broken free to a point where they can go about living their life without worrying about further incidents.
- The time that a victim breaks free from an abusive relationship and for the foreseeable future can be the most dangerous time and it is important to understand just how important it is to be linked to the right sort of support services at this time in the event that things escalate.
- The support services that a victim should be aware of and an easy to access contact list for are emergency services number, whatever that is in your country, a number for a domestic abuse refuge service, in case you need to go into hiding, a number for any free domestic abuse counseling service in your country. These are your top priorities to help you stay safe and get connected to the right support services to assist you.
- Many abusive partners are also jealous and that is why they will often have an attitude of if they can't have you, no one else can have you too. This is what makes new relationships some of the most dangerous times for victims of abuse.
- You never know how you are going to react in a crisis like a jealous partner turning up and becoming abusive to both yourself and your new partner if you are in a new relationship. This is why it is so important to have a safety plan in place so that you have something to fall back on if you freeze.
- Even if you are not in a new relationship and your ex-partner who is abusive thinks that you are seeing someone, this can be equally as dangerous as if you are in a new relationship.
- Jealousy can drive people to do crazy things.
- This cautionary tale emphasizes why it is so important never to let an abusive ex-partner back into your personal space and why it is so important to create safe non-negotiable boundaries like a personal protection court order. You have a right to feel safe and be safe in your own home.
- There is a gap in time between when an incident happens and the time the authorities catch up with perpetrators. This is the time to be on high alert, especially if you are back home which is a familiar place to the perpetrator.
- And then there is also a time of uncertainty after a perpetrator has served time where a victim is in a state of fear not knowing whether the perpetrator may come after them again.
- When you break free from a cycle of abuse and you really invest yourself in your recovery, you can recover a wiser version of the person you lost in the relationship.
- James illustrated how adversity can help you go to the next level in your life. The adversity will bring into focus what is really important in life and help you get more focused on what's important and allow you to let the unimportant stuff go.
- On the other side of adversity lies the opportunity to live a life that is aligned with the things that are most important to you.

Here are the top tips of today’s episode:
- If you find out at any stage in your relationship that your partner has been abusive to other women in previous relationships this is a red flag. You may think that the way that he is currently treating you shows no indications that he will be abusive to you too, but the chances are you will be victim to exactly the same patterns of behavior as his previous partners.
- Maybe you can see yourself as having an unhealthy obsession with the person who you know to be toxic and maybe this will keep you wanting to continue the relationship even when you are already being hurt in a variety of ways.
- When you give yourself permission to do something, you empower yourself. Give yourself choices to help you break free from a victim mindset.
- Keeping a diary or journaling is a great way of getting things out of your head and onto paper.
- Record keeping is something you should be doing in an abusive relationship and when you leave an abusive relationship while you still have contact with the abusive partner. But you must find a way to keep records safely so that they do not jeopardize your safety with your abusive partner.
- Once you are committed to the relationship you may feel too vested to give up on it, and be in a state of hopefulness that everything will somehow work itself out.
- When your partner isolates you from your friends and from your family it is a red flag that they are using coercive control which is a form of abuse.
- Suggesting you move away or convincing you to move away from your friends and family is a tactic to further isolate you, disempower you and control you.
- Financial control is a form of abuse and this happens to 99% of women in abusive relationships. If your partner is controlling your finances and leaving you vulnerable financially you need to find ways to build some emergency funds. The idea is for you to get back enough to allow you to exit the relationship, even if this is only the bond and the first month's rent for a rental property.
- As was the case for Tanya it is very common for women to trust their partner to do the right thing for them financially. It does not seem normal because where there is mutual trust and mutual respect there should be no paper trail to prove that your partner is using your money for the intended purpose. So what do you do? How can you maintain some control when they expect you to blindly trust them with your money? One way might be to say that you will pay for things directly. Today it is very easy to make digital direct transactions. Keep your pin number to yourself and your password to your bank account too. If you have a joint account then keep a close eye on transactions and withdrawals. And always have a separate account that is in your name only and that only you have access to.
- Promises of getting married one day, but never getting to the stage of actually setting a date is another red flag. It is a tactic to keep you feeling loved and honored enough to want to make you his wife, to tug at your heartstrings so that you stay even when you are miserable in the relationship.
- Affairs are very common in abusive relationships. This is another reason to keep you isolated so that you do not have the self-confidence to hold them accountable for their infidelity.
- One way to help yourself to become more objective about whether or not to stay in an abusive relationship is to ask yourself if this was happening to someone else who I love and care about would I want them to stay stuck in this abusive situation?
- Tanya made a point that we might damn ourselves to stay a victim of our circumstances but if we think beyond how this is impacting on our family and other people who love and care about us, it helps us to try our best to do what is needed to begin to turn our lives around for the better.
- We feel hurt and broken and just want to escape the pain of what we are going through, but we need to remember that there are other people who want to see us heal and find happiness and stability in our lives again.
- Finding a good counselor is one of the best things you can do to help you find a path to healing your life. If you do not relate well to a new counselor, try another. It is really important to feel comfortable enough with your counselor that you can let go and open up to them about what it going on for you and how that is making you feel. This helps you to get the weight of what you are carrying outside of yourself and let go of some of the burden of what you are dealing with.
- When you break free from the cycle of abuse and you are reeling from the trauma of what you have been through. It is very easy to still attract the wrong kind of people into your life because you are still carrying so much of the energy from the abusive relationship.
- If all you can think of is what you don't want then write it all down and then flip it. This is one of the exercises I do with my clients. I help them to flip what they don't want into creating a list of things that they do want and this becomes a - goals, dreams and hopes list. This gives you a positive direction to move in and helps you change your energy away from victimhood.
- Remember that micro-steps in the right direction can get you to that goal, dream, or desire that you have. As much as you want an instant fix, it is far better to start taking small manageable steps than it is to wait for that magical transformation to happen instantaneously.
- Starting to empower yourself starts with self-love and self-care. When you start doing the simple things which give yourself value again, like getting your hair done, or buying a magazine, or sitting in nature, your energy will change and you will feel stronger and more like the you that you used to be. Or if you have always been hard on yourself you will begin to reap the benefits of taking care of yourself by giving yourself the love and care you deserve.

Here are the top tips of today’s episode:
- Because money is such a great motivator, it allows you to work on your deep inner self.
- Learning ways to make money is easy, but getting into alignment with money is the challenging part.
- It is important to understand that it is quite normal for women to become accustomed to abuse and this can cause you to settle for being mistreated and staying stuck in a cycle of abuse for longer than you should. With this awareness, you can make a deliberate choice not to stay in a situation that is abusive just because it is something you have become accustomed to.
- It is also quite normal to take on a misguided belief that you have done something to somehow cause what has happened and you feel a sense of blame for what is happening to you.
- When you are receiving money from an abusive partner your relationship with money may become toxic. Toxic money comes from when you receive money from a source for your basic survival and you loathe yourself for taking that money from that source. Toxic money can be different sources, if you have been financially abused and end of on welfare this can become toxic money. The more upset that you get with the supply of that money, the more you need it. This is so important to understand how important it is not to become angry for where your supply of money is coming for your basic survival. Have this negative relationship with the source from which your money is flowing, reinforces negative beliefs, like thinking "I am dumb" or "I am stupid" and reinforcing the belief that you need that source in order to survive. The thing to understand is that our real source is Divine Source energy, how it is coming to us is just a channel. Hopefully, this will help you to look upon what you receive a little differently to be able to detach from the channel of your supply when that channel is a channel you wish you did not have and when you wish that you were receiving your supply from Divine Source energy. It is good to sit down with someone and work out why money has become toxic? At what point it became toxic. When did it become toxic? Then you need to disconnect money from that situation. And then send money blessings. If this is you, then it is good to get some help to work through this with an energy healer. I am an energy healer and I would love to help you with this. - When looking at different forms of abuse, sexual abuse is not only about sexual acts, it can also be in the form of withholding intimacy and telling you lies to make you feel unworthy, or not beautiful, or undesirable, even to the point of telling you things like no man would find you attractive.
- If you are a person of faith, there may be times on your journey where you either will lean in more to God or the Higher being of your faith, or you may distance yourself from God or the Higher being of your faith. Gull said a prayer when her heart was breaking from the deceit of discovering her husband had been unfaithful to her and had been lying to her and abusing her saying that she forgave her husband for the things that he had done and that she did not wish for anything bad to him and could God or the Higher being of her faith do something good for her, to forgive her and give her something good. She chose to turn her attention and energy into inviting good into her life rather than focusing on the things which had happened to her which were unjust and unfair. She chose to go closer to God which helped her heal much faster.
- It is liberating to realize that you are a co-creator in your life. When you understand that you played a part in wherever you are at in your life, then you will understand that you have the power to create something different. This is the key to freeing yourself from staying enslaved to victimhood which robs you of your freedom to make different choices for your life.
- Understanding that it is not just our conscious choices that create our present experiences, but that it can also be our subconscious choices that may also be creating our present experiences allows us to recognize that there are both things we can do consciously and reprogramming the subconscious to bring about positive changes in ourselves and in our lives.
- Things that happen in your past can cause an energy imprint and this energy imprint can cause the same thing to play out in your life in your adulthood. Remember though that if you are capable of creating one thing you are capable of creating another thing. And this other thing can be created with an awareness that you are worth more than what you have been tolerating to this point.

Today's guest, Joseph Reid is the Founder and executive director of the organization Broken People, he has a bachelor’s degree in InterdisciplMeinary Studies, and he leads a support group with America’s largest grassroots mental health movement NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).
He is also the author of the book Broken Like Me.
Joseph shares his own journey with feeling broken and his path to getting mended.

Here are the top tips of today’s episode:
- If you are feeling broken it is so important for you to have a community of people that you feel like, they love you, make you feel safe to share your struggles, and be vulnerable.
- One of the keys to breaking free from a victim mindset is to be intentional with your day, with your thoughts, and with your actions.
- Remember that you can't drink water from an empty cup. This is just a reminder that you cannot give and give and give of yourself without replenishing and taking care of your own needs.
- Look at who you are surrounding yourself with in your life. Are they helping you to replenish your cup or are they draining whatever may be left in your cup? Maybe you don't have anyone because you have become so isolated because of the relationship you are in. Maybe it's time to look at how you can connect with people who are going to give you something back to help you become stronger.
- The ship of relationships will not float without two people relating to each other in an open and honest and vulnerable and real way.
- To try and find happiness again when dealing with depression, you can try and change your actions and watch your emotions catch up. Be ok with what you need at that moment, without worrying about what other people will think of you.
- Journaling is a fantastic tool to help you heal, grow and develop.
- Drawing or coloring is another wonderful therapeutic tool. It has a very calming effect.
- Don't settle for not being ok, there are supports out there, there are things that you can do to improve the quality of your life.
- The victim state can keep in you in a place of being ok with not being ok. But it is important to understand that although your choices may be limited that you are still able to choose something as basic as choosing to take the best possible care of yourself.
- Start small with what you do to move forward, when you get the small wins the wins will get bigger and bigger as you go along.
- Celebrate your wins.
- Intuitive journaling where you write everything down by just letting your thoughts just flow out of you is a great technique for getting in touch with what is happening under the surface and getting it outside of yourself.
- Joseph describes a technique he has in his book where he has four pillars to build a list of what he can do. This helps him create some steps to help him rise up out of his depression.
- You are you, you are unique. Don't try and mimic exactly what someone else is doing. Make what you do tailor-made to you and what works for you.
- Ask yourself questions like how can I best utilize something to help me?
- Start with loving yourself, the more that you love yourself, the more you will be able to love others too.
- Remember your value by taking steps to mend your life, just because you are broken doesn't mean you can't be fixed. Just because you feel broken doesn't mean you can't be fixed.

EPISODE NOTES FOR THE MONICA EARL WASHINGTON INTERVIEW
A survivor's story of overcoming economic strife with a financially abusive marriage.
Today's guest, Monica Earl Washington is a survivor of an abusive relationship who has courageously opened up the door to what went on behind closed doors in her abusive marriage and talks about the impacts this relationship had on her psychologically, emotionally, physically, and economically.
Monica shares openly the trials and challenges she has faced, which have led to enormous sacrifice over recent times to be able to find ways to become more empowered.
Juggling a time of navigating courts, keeping up with her work, being there to help support a disabled son, and managing household finances led to Monica disconnecting for a time from people and social media.
Monica went inward and started practicing stillness and meditation to reconnect with herself and get back on top of her health.
When Monica wanted to cave in, she would tell herself "Monica make it work".
Her favourite saying is "keep your running shoes around your neck." This helps her to always be ready to run through the maze of life.
She shares her willingness to make sacrifices to get resourceful in times where things were looking very dire.
Her faith, was instrumental in helping her through the most challenging times, and the products she has created using essential oils have been born out of the time of getting back to basics, during the toughest times.
She is a truly inspirational woman and I was honoured to have this opportunity to talk with her.

Here are the top tips of today’s episode:
- Keep your running shoes on, to be ready to run through the maze of life.
- When you are at the first stage of separation and you are under pressure with financial pressures and other external pressures from abusive behaviors, it is time to get back to basics. This is the time to get resourceful and use what you have wisely. And be ok to make do with what you have. Putting energy into resentment for the things you don't have will only drain your energy more.
- It's ok to like nice things and desire nice things, but it is not healthy to have a strong attachment to them, or put too much emphasis on them when you are in a cycle of abuse. Your safety is the most important thing. You can replace things and you can acquire things again when you are free from the cycle of abuse.
- When Monica chose to withdraw during her time of great struggle, she looked at what she could do to look after herself better through this time. She ate healthily and lost weight, making her healthier and more capable of navigating her challenges. And the biggest win for Monica born of this time of going back to basics but allowing herself to still explore ways to take care of herself, she created a line of products using essential oils which has become a new source of income to help her find her way back to financial independence and financial stability.
- Monica has a very proactive attitude. She is constantly asking what she can do and what the underlying message might be in what she is experiencing. When things started going wrong with her house, she saw this as a message that the love had left. This was one of the prompts she followed to show herself love through this time.
- Betrayal recovery does not happen overnight, tap into support to help you work through the challenges you face.
- Remember to take time for self-care, to really nourish yourself and show yourself, love.

Here are the top tips of today’s episode:
- It is never a victim's fault
- There are different stages on the journey. The first is the victim stage where you are filled with blame, anger, hatred, guilt, etc., The second stage is that of survivor mode where you are trying to make meaning of what happened and get your life back together again. We can then travel to the thriver stage and beyond.
- If you are experiencing physical ailments try and listen to your body and the underlying message it is trying to show you. Physical problems can be an indication that we need to give attention to something else we are missing that we need or what is missing.
- This is why it is essential to deal with your emotions because if you don't the triggers will come back again and again.
- it is important to sit with your emotions and work out what they are doing to you and what they are doing for you.
- Hate is such a negative emotion and the more we focus on negativity the more of the same we will attract.
- A wonderful strategy to help reconnect with positive emotions which you would like to experience more of in your life is to go through an exercise where you engage your senses and create a vision board of sorts. For example, if you want to experience more happiness, you could say happiness looks like sunshine and find a picture of the sun shining. And you could say happiness smells like apple pie and find a picture of an apple pie. And you could say happiness feels like a hug and you could find a picture of two people hugging. And you could say happiness sounds like a babbling brook. And you could say happiness tastes like homemade lemonade.
- Lois has developed the anacronym BRAVE as a teaching method to help young people learn appropriate behavior. B stands for boundaries. R stands for respecting boundaries. A stands for mutual agreement. V stands for values and vulnerabilities. And E stands for empowering yourself and have equality.
- When we hold onto unforgiveness it bonds us to negative emotions or feelings. When we cannot forgive, we can become weighed down by unforgiveness.
- It is important to understand that when you are in victim mode you are incapable of forgiving because you are still at the first stage of reacting to what has happened to you before you are able to move to survivor mode where you are beginning to process what has happened to you. Even when you are at the survivor stage, you are not yet ready to forgive completely because you are still trying to piece your life back together again. When you shift into the thriver stage where you start actively creating a new reality for yourself, then this is the time where you are able to forgive. Forgiveness happens when you are ready.
- I compassionately and completely forgive you and I take responsibility for my higher self and I hand it back to your higher self and I take back my power.
- The more we practice forgiveness, the easier it becomes. So try Lois's tip of writing 3 things you forgive yourself for every day and 3 things you forgive others for every day. Develop that forgiveness muscle.
- We can either get bitter, or we can get better.

Here are the top tips of today’s episode:
- In life some things are in our control and some things that happen to us are not in our control, and what our aim can be is when life feels unmanageable is to do our best to to manage our responsibilities to the best of our abilities.
- As women we are strong and we feel we have to have it all together all of the time, but when we are faced with challenges and life gets messy, it is good to remember that there is real strength in seeking support. Remember the age old saying "Many hands make light work". We can accomplish more with the right support.
- To keep as much of your power when you are going through tough times, try to see the difference between the things that are in your control and the things that are not. This way you can focus your energy on the things that are in your control and detach from the things which are not, helping you to conserve your energy for the things which will make a difference to you and your situation.
- When you feel you have the ability to control some aspects of your life this can give you the peace and the strength and the hope to keep going in challenging times. So try and focus on anything, no matter how small that is still within your control.
- When looking for someone to support you in what you are going through, find a confidante who has experience with what you are going through, who can relate and understand, and can help you work out the steps you need to take to navigate a way through to the other side.
- You can measure the value of what someone else is pouring into your life by the strength that you gain from their support. You may find that someone who is only able to give you pity leaves you feeling as powerless as ever. Whereas someone who shows you understanding and is able to ask you the right questions to help you discover the answers inside yourself leaves you feeling strong and optimistic about facing your challenges.
- Your subconscious mind is led by your emotions and when you are feeling scared and depressed, your subconscious mind responds to this and you continue to flounder and feel disempowered. With a strong mindset on what you want instead of what you have, and the right strategies to change what your subconscious mind is trained to believe from your experiences, you can rise above your challenges and create a path to take you to where you want to go.
- Change does not happen instantaneously, it is a process and the more we accept this and allow ourselves time for changes to manifest in our lives the more we allow the flow of good and new opportunities to appear in our lives.
- Fear can protect you and it can hold you back from taking action to take back your power. This is a great time to reach out for support to help you identify the things that will help you navigate a path to safety and to freedom and to clarify what is real and perceived fear in your life and your situation.
- Try practising mindfulness and guided meditation to help you find a place of calm which will help you to make reasoned choices about making changes which will help you and the situation you are in.
- It is important to find the courage to use your voice to reach out and ask for help. Even though fear of what other people may think about you may be making you feel too vulnerable to speak about the challenges you are going through, it is so important to push past those feelings and reach out and get help. If you feel too afraid to speak to people who are close to you, speak to an online domestic violence counselling service, or speak to your dr, or speak to the police, or speak to someone like me. I offer a call with no charge, my gift to those who would like me help, so that nothing will stand in the way of anyone reaching out and getting support.
- When you don't have strength yourself, know your go to's for strength, whether that is talking to a trusted friend, or your your faith, or your children. Use those things to draw strength from to persevere in challenging times.
- To step back into your power engage in the healing relationship with yourself. Give yourself back the value in yourself that you truly deserve and your life and choices for your highest good will become more clear.
- Its easy to blame yourself for some of the things that have happened to you in your life, but this is the time to understand that our mistakes are opportunities for our growth and our own healing.
- Learning to love yourself will give you the freedom to make choices in line with your highest good and lead you to a life you love.

Here are the top tips of today’s episode:
- The thing about trauma is it can make you want to disappear from yourself, and your own internal pain, from others and from life.
- When we are feeling traumatised we no longer feel safe inside ourselves.
- Trauma causes disconnection and disassociation.
- Trauma is not a one and done thing. It is a part of your life, a part of your journey.
- I just love this point, so I want you to please listen very carefully. Getting the right support can help us to stop being victimised by our own history. What this means is that you can get out of victim mode, or victim mentality and still be triggered by your trauma leading you to still feeling victimised by your history with the experiences you have had which caused the trauma. Understanding that when you are on a recovery path that you become better supported and equipped to stop being victimised by those experiences when triggers occur.
- Although trauma is crippling, we can't let it cripple us.
- The more that you are able to go about daily life despite you feeling like just withdrawing, the less you will fall into unhealthy mind loops. We can pause and do our healing work in the midst of the rest of life.
- Use 5 times as many positive affirmations or affirming activities to every bit of negative self-talk or negative challenge.
- When you experience trauma you can fall into a well with seemingly no way out, until someone comes along and helps pull us out of that well. I love this analogy because it shows how easy it is for us to fall into the depths of despair in our human frailty and it also shows that at these times it is perfectly understandable to need someone else to help pull us up and out of the depths of despair. These are the times in our lives where it is the right time to call for help.
- The trigger is there because there is some emotional or psychological need that we didn't get met.
- There are fundamental attachment needs that we need as human beings, they are to feel safe physically, emotionally and energetically and to belong to a group of people. So what our triggers do is point us to the unmet need in us.
- When fundamental attachment needs are unmet in us children we become ashamed of them and shut them down.
- So at the moment when we are triggered, we can ask ourselves what do we need that is unmet at that moment we can reassure ourselves and ask ourselves how we can get that.
- We have to change our internal representation so that we can have a different experience.
- Slow down, it will help you to orient yourself and find your place of calm.
- When you are on your healing journey and something triggers you, it can take you back to the experience which caused the trauma, and you may be questioning why you are still so affected when you are already so far along your healing journey. It is understanding the energetic charge of the experience is the thing that is causing you to feel so affected by the trigger. Understanding that this emotional explosion is grounded in the past and that this is not your present and then finding reminders in your present to create the that was then, but this is now and now is different is where you can draw strength from in those moments.
