EPISODE NOTES FOR THE ALI SUGARS INTERVIEW
TIPS FOR ADDRESSING BULLYING AND SEXUAL HARRASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE
ALI SUGARS, aka “the motivation mama” is a woman’s transformation coach and is the host of the Purple Warrior’s Podcast. She is a survivor of social, emotional, verbal, sexual and financial abuse. She uses her experience to help other abuse survivors discover their empowered voice to become unapologetically power-house women.
The focus of this interview is workplace bullying and sexual harassment. The underlying message is that it is not only ok to stand up for yourself, but it is necessary to protect your safety and sanity and that of your colleagues.
TOP 10 TIPS
- Keep records of incidents, as this helps you give context to support your case.
- Keep hard copies of any signed agreements.
- Be prepared to speak up and speak out about what is happening; advocate for yourself.
- Engage in counselling to help support you through the process, you may be able to access free counselling support through your place of employment.
- Listen to your body, if physical illness is manifesting, consider how that might relate to an area of your life which might be toxic, like workplace relations, or relations with an individual.
- Know that the workplace bullying and/or sexual harassment is not your fault and you don’t deserve it.
- Speak to the contact officer in your workplace, to have a confidential discussion and they will be able to facilitate the correct procedures to address your concerns. If you don’t have a contact officer at your work, talk to your doctor, or a free online counselling service, about your concerns and they will help guide you with avenues to go down.
- If you choose to have a face-to-face meeting to address your concerns with the perpetrator you are allowed to take a support person in with you
- Give yourself permission to seek the appropriate support to help put a stop to inappropriate things which are happening, reminding yourself that you were not the one creating the circumstance causing you distress.
- You deserve to be treated with respect.

Ep 24 - What to do when you feel Christmas fear instead of Christmas cheer!
Sunday Dec 20, 2020
Sunday Dec 20, 2020
EPISODE NOTES FOR THE CHRISTMAS EPISODE
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU FEEL CHRISTMAS FEAR INSTEAD OF CHRISTMAS CHEER
With Christmas just around the corner, this episode is dedicated to women who are facing challenges because of an abusive relationship.
My aim is to provide you with some strategies to stay safe and have some useful tips to help you get through this difficult time of the year.
Christmas should be a time of peace, goodwill, and joy.
But what about where there is a breakdown in a relationship, or there is a cycle of abuse in a relationship?
What does this time of the year represent for women and children effected by family violence?
Instead of feeling excited about Christmas women effected by domestic violence can be left with feelings of dread.
Knowing how complex it is like to navigate through this time of the year safely is why I have put together this episode to hopefully help you feel supported.
Your safety is the number one priority this Christmas and that of your children, if you are a parent too.
Just a reminder if you are in immediate danger call the police.
If you are feeling isolated and scared and do not know who to turn to, use a free online domestic violence counselling support service.
If you need food relief, turn to charitable organizations for support.
If you are struggling to tap into support, you can get in touch with me and I will try to connect you with a domestic violence support organization. I cannot guarantee that I will get back to you immediately, it may take me 24 hours to reply.
I am back on board for my coaching work from 28 December, but will be checking in with my messages each day.
For anyone interested in getting some coaching support to get your life back on track in 2021, I will be available to start my Twelve week Triumph Over Trials Coaching Program in January. If you are looking for support to get you over the hurdles you are facing, this program can help you build a strong foundation to help you become empowered to take back control over your life.

Ep 23 - It’s time to end the stigma with relationship abuse!
Sunday Dec 13, 2020
Sunday Dec 13, 2020
On today’s episode I have Whytli Rogers co-founder of End the Stigma.
I am so happy to have a young person’s voice on the podcast to speak to other’s who might be listening who can relate to her and her experiences.
She speaks openly about her very first relationship as a 15-year-old in high school which was mentally and sexually abusive. She shares her experiences of how she was beaten down mentally and suffered from severe anxiety, depression, and suicide attempts. And after that relationship, she had to learn to love herself again, prioritize her mental health, and rise above the pain.
What she discovered when she decided to speak out about her experiences openly on social media is that she was contacted my other women from all age groups and walks of life saying how much her experience was like her own.
Whytli continues to try and end the stigma around mental and sexual abuse and anxiety and depression. She has her own podcast In The Wake with Whytli and she is a certified life coach.
The Top Ten Takeaways from today’s show
- Talking openly about what your anxiety or depression looks like is the biggest thing to help end the stigma.
- Try to advocate for your own mental health to help people help you the way you need.
- Keep in mind that people who don’t know what to do may make assumptions they know what is best for you.
- Get curious and ask yourself questions to help you respond to your needs when you are dealing with anxiety and depression.
- You are the only one who can do the inner work.
- When you are in a higher state or neutral state, try and plan ahead for what you need if you become triggered.
- If you process your trauma it can help you to function better with day-to-day life.
- Writing affirmations post trauma in a journal before bedtime can speak directly to your subconscious mind and help to calm you.
A few examples: I am safe, I survived, I am no longer in that relationship anymore, he cannot hurt me anymore, he has no power over me.
- Educate yourself by reading books, listening to podcasts like this one, looking within groups to learn all you can about abuse.
- Understand it’s ok to say no.
We openly share our trials, tears and triumphs in this conversation about the path to healing and realisation on the other side of an abusive relationship, and ultimately, the importance of learning to love yourself.
I hope that you enjoy this talk with this extraordinary young woman using her experience to help other’s not feel alone in what they are going through.

Sunday Dec 06, 2020
On today’s episode I have the lovely Kelly Darling, co-author with her sister Sophie S Fort of the book Is Love Enough? Toxic Relationships – Worth Holding Onto? Or Time to Let Go?
In this conversation we dive deep to ask the question is love enough?
Sophie and Kelly were raised in an environment of family violence and alcoholism. This upbringing led them to be unable to form a clear sense of what a healthy relationship is and left them both open to breakdowns in their marriages.
Kelly now works as a counsellor, predominantly with couples. She also works with individuals who struggle to understand their internal pain and support them as they continue their quest for belonging and love. Sophie runs Sands (Pregnancy, Newborn and Infant Loss) in an area of the South Island in New Zealand and has a diploma in Life Coaching.
The Top Ten Takeaways from today’s show
- If you can’t find your voice in your relationship or if it doesn’t feel safe, it is a good idea to seek some support with counselling, therapy and coaching.
- If you are asking when is it good to do couple’s counselling? It is good when both people in the relationship are open to working on the issues and still have trust in each other.
- Life is a process, anything we do in life is a process. In relationships finding out what you are worth and what you deserve can be a painful process.
- If you are miserable and lacking joy in your life, ask yourself why and get support.
- Your life is also your children’s life. What you are living, your children are living too.
- When we make mistakes, we have to have compassion for ourselves and acknowledge we’re not perfect and try to learn from this to do better next time.
- When you make a mistake try and have self-validation by saying I am going through a lot right now, so it is understandable if we cry, or we fall down, but don’t stay down, get up again.
- Love = safe connection
Safe conflict in a relationship = growth
In love actions need to = words
- If there is no conflict in a relationship, then someone may have lost their voice and themselves in the relationship.
- Anxiety and fear steals, all your energy. If you stay in self-pity you can’t be productive, you can get trapped.
We openly share our trials, tears and triumphs in this conversation about the complexities of toxic relationships and when to stay and when to go.
I hope that you enjoy this talk with this wonderful woman using her passion to help people with their relationships and you take a look at the book that she has co-written with her sister Sophie.

On today’s episode I have the amazing, articulate lone parent and successful business owner of My Body Couture, Janis Isaman.
In this conversation we explore what it takes for a lone parent to create a successful business.
We canvas he differences and the similarities between lone parents and single parents.
Janis came from a successful career in the media and when she found herself in a position of being a lone parent from the time she was pregnant with her child.
She faced a crossroad of which path she would follow in combining her work life with her life as a sole parent. Would she return to her demanding job in the media or take the leap and create her own business?
We talk about women’s right to choose a path which works best for them in creating a healthy sustainable work/life balance, a subject which many women feel judged on.
Janis pursued her passion in health, pain management and nutrition to help people experience relief from chronic pain and create and cultivate sustainable healthy habits. Anyone who has experienced chronic pain will know the relief they experience when their pain levels are diminished and how this helps them in every area of their lives to function better and more effectively.
This is a great interview to listen to if you are thinking about becoming an entrepreneur and starting up your own business while juggling single or lone parenting.
TOP 10 TAKEAWAY’S FROM THIS EPISODE

- Women should be free to choose how they juggle work and parenting without judgement.
- Take measured risks when making big changes.
- Position yourself to be successful by taking achievable steps.
- Put yourself first, because no one else is going to.
